Daily Checks & Procedures
Required daily operator tasks: water level, blowdown, LWCO test, log entries.
Daily Operator Duties
The boiler operator is responsible for verifying safe operating conditions every shift.
- Check water level in the gauge glass — verify with try cocks
- Record steam pressure, water level, and temperatures in the logbook
- Test the LWCO by blowdown — verify burner shuts off
- Blow down the gauge glass to verify accuracy
- Blow down the water column
- Check burner operation and flame appearance
- Verify feedwater pump operation
- Check for leaks (steam, water, fuel, exhaust)
Document all checks and readings in the boiler logbook every shift.
Bottom Blowdown Procedure
Bottom blowdown removes accumulated sludge and sediment from the lowest point of the boiler.
- Performed at the start of shift or as specified by water treatment program
- Open the blowdown valve quickly and fully — brief, forceful blasts
- Close the valve closest to the boiler FIRST when shutting blowdown
- Watch the gauge glass during blowdown — maintain adequate water level
- Never leave blowdown valves unattended while open
Gauge Glass Blowdown
Regular gauge glass blowdown clears sediment and verifies the gauge glass connections are clear.
- Close steam valve, open drain — clears the glass with water
- Close water valve, open drain — clears with steam
- Close drain, open both valves — water level should return to normal
- If water level returns slowly or not at all, connections may be plugged
